Our family had been sharing a bathroom for 6 years (First World problems, I know!) And with two growing kids, we couldn’t be more excited to finally have a primary bathroom to ourselves!
We started out by thinking through different scenarios for the layout, but since we tackled a full-home reno, we wanted to also make cost-effective decisions that still gave a designer look, but didn’t break the bank or take away from the organization/function of the room. The original primary bath (I don’t like calling it by the out-dated word “Master Bath!”) had a large jetted tub, which was the first thing I knew had to go! (For all of you who are cringing because you love baths, I never, EVER take a bath, I’m a shower girl!)Be true to yourself when you make your design renovation choices! If you know you’ll never use a $2000 tub, my motto is to redirect that money to something you’ll actually use! We have had massive tiled showers in other homes, (and no matter what you tell me, they always get dingy and moldy, no matter how neurotic you clean!) so I knew I wanted this shower to be timeless, but not the focal point of the room.
When we were renovating our bathroom, COVID was on the scene, so our options were limited as far as hardware. I wanted all brass, but the Delta faucet options that were available at the time did not match our other antique brass fixtures,so I went with the matte black option. I love mixing metals (not more than 2 per room, in my opinion!) and throughout the house you will see all black matte door knobs and hinges, as well as our black iron railing and mixed metal chandeliers. So, back to the bathroom– the black and antique brass was perfect for our space. I knew I wanted a painted vanity that was fun, but also a soothing color. I ended up choosing Sherwin Williams Waterscape. We knew that we wanted to use Semihandmade cabinet fronts because of the designer look, but not the designer price tag. Because they work with IKEA cabinet bases, and we chose the DIY custom color fonts, we were able to save a lot of money! Check out our Instagram stories to see how Matt sprayed the fronts. For the sink fixtures, we chose a widespread faucet in matte gold from All Modern. The hardware on the cabinet is Lew’s Hardware. The 30″ mirrors are from West Elm and the 3 sconces are from West Elm. I wanted to have plenty of light, so Matt installed can lights in the ceiling, and I also purchased custom Bali bamboo blinds (lined) in Antigua Tiki from Home Depot during one of their sales. They have the option to open from the top if I want a little light (and privacy! You’re welcome, neighbors!) but don’t want to open them up all the way. I use that option most days when I’m doing my makeup.
I added a rattan bar cart from Homegoods in a nook beside the window to hold towels and of course, a plant. Then I added a coordinating rattan flower pot and tissue holder for the vanity. I like to switch out my towels often so I have some fun striped ones from Anthropologie, some colorful ones from Opalhouse Target and also some nice fluffy white ones from Homegoods. The rugs are Opalhouse from Target and coordinate with the vanity and the wallpaper in the watercloset (more on that later.) If I ever find the perfect runner, I’ll nab it, but these work for now! Now to details on the custom vanity! IKEA Sektion cabinets are “kitchen” cabinet sizes, so we did an #ikeahack to customize our vanity. I had around 156″ to work with, so I chose a 30″ tall cabinet for my main linen closet (and it has drawers!) since our house didn’t come with a linen closet (weird, huh?!) (Other than a minuscule closet in the hallway that we affectionately call the “triangle closet” that can hold our Dyson handheld vacuum. BEST ever, IMO.). Here are the dimensions for the cabinets: In order from L to R, 24″ 3-drawer cabinet, 24″ cabinet for the sink, 30″ 6-drawer cabinet, 24″ cabinet for the sink, 24″ 3-drawer cabinet. This configuration has worked out perfectly, and I have more than enough space for travel sets, makeup, medicine drawers, linen closet and even empty drawers I have yet to fill (Gasp!). One perk of using IKEA cabinet bases are the organization add-ons! I used the white organization trays in my drawers and the white utility bins to create a clean and organized space. Two of the drawers have the inside hidden drawers that provide even more storage.
For our tile, I went with Floor & Decor 11×13″ Ariano blanco hexagon ceramic tile with Maepi Timberwolf grout color. Please don’t ever let your friend (or yourself!) use white grout! It will not hide dust and dirt, and let’s face it, do you want to be scrubbing grout all day? I sure as heck don’t! Last but not least is the pop-of-color in our water closet! I chose a Spoonflower paper that is super fun & always makes me smile. I’m still looking for the perfect quirky piece of art, but haven’t landed on the right piece yet. As for now, it has my WW scale that I step on every day, (yay for consistency. . . now about those extra cookies. . .) and my Anthropologie black polka dot cowhide & brass magazine holder hides in the corner.
